PRECISION IN LOW VISION EXAMS

Kamani Nagurski a low vision specialist who has dedicated her career to helping people with vision loss regain their independence. She graduated from the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI) Vision Care Program in 2014 and began her career as a Certified Optician before joining the Department of Veterans Affairs.

At the VA, she discovered her passion for low vision care. While many technicians found the work difficult, she saw something different: hope. Working closely with the clinic’s low vision doctor, she witnessed how the right tools and training could allow someone who could barely see the “big E” on the eye chart to read their mail, use a computer, and reconnect with the world.

When the VA’s low vision doctor was deployed on active duty, Kamani stepped in to fill a critical gap. For more than a year, she became the primary low vision provider for veterans across the state, running the clinic, supporting patients, and making sure no one was left without care. During that time, she helped veterans with severe vision loss learn how to use magnifiers, electronic devices, and accessibility technology to continue living full, independent lives.

Her work is grounded not only in professional training and certification, but in compassion, patience, and a deep respect for the people she serves. Through her low vision consulting business, Kamani is bringing this life-changing support out of large institutions and into the community—so more people can continue reading, working, and living on their own terms.
